Gradually, attention to medicinal plants increased. Today, medicinal plants make a significant contribution to health care, provide livelihoods for certain segments of the population, and are among the most valuable non-woody plant resources. Today, many scientists point out that medicinal plants have great potential to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction in developing countries - Seri Astotik, Jürgen Pertz and Jude Nedzifon Kimengsi (2019), Ybirzaf Yeshivas (2018). Medicinal plants are a valuable raw material for the production of medicines.
Thus, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Wildlife Fund, there are currently between 50,000 and 80,000 species of medicinal plants in the world that are used for medicinal purposes. More than 80% of people and 90% of domestic animals in developing countries rely entirely on herbal medicines in primary health care, and in developed countries, more than 25% of medicines are obtained from wild medicinal plants.
Cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants (urban mint) is one of the alternative economic crops in Syria due to the suitability of natural and environmental conditions for their cultivation, as the study was conducted on all farmers in Latakia Governorate. And their number reached 317 farmers with a cultivated area of 177 dunums in 2020.
The production of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) from wild collection or through cultivation raises environmental, social and economic issues. The demand for a variety of wild species is increasing with the growth of human needs and trade. There is awareness that many wild plants are overexploited, which many experts recommend incorporating them into cropping systems, but several aspects that determine their viability must be considered. An alternative is small-scale cultivation.
